Blues Sweep Pioneers on Halloween Night

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team delivered a crucial victory in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-9) over Lewis & Clark on Halloween night at Sherwood Center, keeping their postseason hopes alive with only two weekends left in the Northwest Conference campaign.

Addie Belt led the Whitman (9-11, 8-5 NWC) offense with 11 kills and an impressive .526 hitting percentage, and Arina Gushchina chipped in a match-high 11 kills as well. Bella Vickers sparked the team in the final set, collecting five kills and leading a service run that put the match out of reach.

After a back-and-forth first set, the Blues pulled away late to secure a 25-19 win. Whitman carried that momentum into the second, jumping out to an early lead behind timely attacks from Belt and Haylee Pruse. Lewis & Clark fought to stay close, but Whitman's .346 hitting and assertive serving closed out the frame.

The third set was all Whitman, as Melia Ferraro's aces and contributions from the bench provided breathing room. The Blues sealed the sweep with a dominant 25-9 finish, capping one of their most efficient attacking performances of the season (.293 hitting as a team; .440 in set three).

Ferraro's 15 assists were a match high as were Jamie Bartok's 12 digs.

Whitman now sits firmly in the hunt for the fourth but only one-half game up on Willamette for that coveted spot. The win drops Lewis & Clark to 0-20 (0-13 NWC).
