Fotu Goes For Career High, Men's Basketball Drops Wolves In Season Opener

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team launched its 2025-26 campaign in dominant fashion, fending off crosstown rival Walla Walla University 87-74 on Wednesday night.

The spotlight belonged to sophomore forward Jacob Fotu, who erupted for a career-high 29 points to lead the Blues' season-opening charge. Fotu, efficient and nearly unstoppable, scored in a variety of ways and made timely buckets to answer any Wolves' run in the second half. He finished an impressive 12-of-18 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep, and added five rebounds and three steals to his stat line.

Anchoring the paint, Milos Sarenac delivered a double-double with 17 points and a game-high and commanding 15 rebounds. Sarenac's work inside was crucial as Whitman out-rebounded Walla Walla 53-24, generating valuable second-chance opportunities during key stretches. Whitman's frontcourt advantage helped hold off Walla Walla who trailed the Blues by double digits for most of the contest.

Ali Efe Isik chipped in 15 points while Djordje Lazarevic and Ken Higgins added 10 and seven more, respectively, giving Whitman four double-digit scorers. The team shot 45.6 percent from the field and posted 17 assists on 31 made baskets. After leading 37-36 at halftime, the Blues surged with a 50-point second half.

Walla Walla's Jordan Jackson matched Fotu with 29 points and never let the game slip completely out of reach for the Wolves.

Next up for Whitman is its home opener this Saturday, Nov. 15 against Bethany College. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
