Men's Soccer Rally Falls Short In 3-2 Loss To TLU In NCAA First Round

SAN ANTONIO - The Whitman College men's soccer team nearly pulled off a stunning comeback in its first ever NCAA Tournament game but fell short in a 3-2 loss to Texas Lutheran in the opening round on Saturday night at Paul McGinlay Field.

Texas Lutheran (13-4-3) jumped out to an early lead, scoring first in the 32nd minute when Carson Alldredge found the net off a pass from Max Guzman. The Bulldogs dominated possession throughout the first half, holding Whitman without a shot and keeping the Blues on the defensive as the teams went into halftime with TLU up 1-0.

Early in the second half, Texas Lutheran doubled the advantage as Jesus Carrillo scored in the 49th minute, assisted by Raymond Palmer and Romario Salazar. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 78th minute when Carrillo struck again on a pass from Guzman, a goal that looked to put the game out of reach for the Blues.

But Whitman (14-1-6) refused to fold, and the drama was just beginning. Jude Clum-Stockton ignited a furious rally with an unassisted goal in the 80th minute. Just over three minutes later, momentum swung sharply as Kevin Serrano finished a scoring sequence set up by Fernando Lopez-Vega and Remy Marcks to pull the Blues within a single goal at the 80th minute.

With the clock winding down, Whitman pressed hard for an equalizer, launching a series of shots and winning several corners, but TLU held firm to advance. The Blues finished with 10 shots—all in the second half—and six corner kicks, while goalkeeper Niclas Isensee recorded two saves.

Despite the loss, Whitman's comeback effort marked a memorable finish to an outstanding season, one that saw its first outright league title since 1981 and inaugural appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
