Men's Basketball Drops Road Opener at CalLu

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Whitman College men's basketball opened its Southern California road trip with a 71-59 loss at Cal Lutheran on Friday night. Milos Sarenac highlighted the effort as he recorded his third consecutive double-double to start the season, but the Blues couldn't overcome a fast start by the Kingsmen in Thousand Oaks.

Cal Lutheran came out strong, jumping to a 41-24 halftime lead after shooting 51.6% from the field and hitting six three-pointers before the break. Whitman struggled to find their rhythm, shooting just 28.6% in the first half and going 2-10 from beyond the arc, which allowed the Kingsmen to control the pace and build momentum early.

Sarenac continued his dominant stretch by posting 15 points and 14 rebounds, notching his third straight double-double and leading Whitman (2-1) in both categories. Sarenac contributed on both ends and picked up three assists, helping to fuel a second-half push as the Blues narrowed the gap.

Whitman responded with much-improved play in the second half, shooting 53.6% from the floor and outscoring Cal Lutheran 35-30 over the final 20 minutes. Ali Efe Isik added 15 points and Bernard Dzesi chipped in seven more off the bench, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

The Blues dominated the paint with 36 points inside and grabbed 15 second-chance points, but Cal Lutheran answered with timely baskets and held off Whitman's late rally.

The Blues continue their Southern California swing on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
