Men's Basketball Falls At Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Whitman College men's basketball team was unable to overcome a challenging shooting night, falling 57-52 at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Jacob Fotu led the Blues (2-2) with 11 points and Mehmet Bener added 10 more. Sarp Goekberk pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds.

Charlie Hutchinson led the Sagehens, putting up a double double with game highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds

The game featured eleven ties and eight lead changes, highlighting a back-and-forth contest from the tip. Whitman gained its largest lead, 17-12, with 7:45 left in the first half after a fast-break bucket by Gokberk. The Blues took advantage of strong defensive pressure, turning Pomona-Pitzer over and scoring off those miscues, but the hosts responded with a 7-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead.

Pomona-Pitzer led by a single point, 27-26, at halftime. Fotu scored eight of his points in the opening frame, keeping the Blues within striking distance despite the team's cold 1-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.

Coming out of the break, both teams traded baskets. The Sagehens extended their advantage to 35-31 following a Kyle Jasper three-pointer, but Whitman answered again, knotting the score at 39-39 with 10 minutes left after a pair of free throws by Ken Higgins.

However, repeated scoring droughts hampered the Blues' momentum. In the final five minutes, Hutchinson delivered the decisive blow with a three-pointer at the 3:59 mark, pushing the lead to 52-49.
Whitman managed to tie it one last time at 52-52 on a three by Bener, but a Jasper triple followed by clutch free throws from Hutchinson sealed the win for the Sagehens.

Whitman will have a day off before closing out its road trip against Caltech on Monday, Nov. 24. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
