Men's Basketball Pulls Away From Walla Walla U

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team rode its hottest three-point shooting night of the season and a career performance from Ken Higgins to an 86-76 win over crosstown foe Walla Walla University on Saturday night at Sherwood Center. The win was the second by the Blues over WWU (0-5) this season.

Higgins finished with a team- and career-high 19 points, knocking down 5 of 9 three-pointers and shooting 7-13 from the field overall. 10 of those points came after halftime as he repeatedly punished the Wolves for leaving him space on the perimeter.

In the first half, Higgins helped Whitman settle in after an early deficit, answering with a right-wing three in transition and later adding another from the top of the key to keep pace in what became a 41–41 halftime tie. After the break he was even more efficient, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from deep, including a second-chance three off an offensive rebound that pushed the lead to 63-52 with just over 11 minutes to play.

After both teams emerged from their locker rooms knotted at 41-41, Whitman opened the second half with a 19-9 run to seize control. Milos Sarenac scored on a driving layup, and after a Wolves answer, Marcel Elicagaray buried a three from the left wing to make it 46-43, giving the Blues a lead they would not relinquish.

Whitman finished 13-for-28 from beyond the arc, a blistering 46.4 percent and its best three-point shooting performance of the season by percentage. The efficiency from distance helped offset Walla Walla's edge at the free-throw line and in points in the paint.

The Blues return to action next Saturday for their final non-conference game of the regular season. They will host Northwest Indian College at 4:00 p.m. at the Sherwood Center.
