Men's Basketball Falls To Mary Hardin-Baylor

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team led at halftime but a turnover-plagued second half allowed the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to pull away for a 90–75 win Thursday night at Sherwood Athletic Center.

The Blues committed a season-high 22 turnovers and surrendered a season-high 90 points as the Crusaders turned miscues into 29 points the other way.

Milos Sarenac paced Whitman with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds, repeatedly attacking the lane and drawing fouls. Djordje Lazarevic added 16 points with four made threes to keep the Blues afloat offensively. Ali Efe Isik chipped in eight points and seven rebounds, and Bernard Dzesi provided an 11-point spark off the bench.

After falling behind 10-1 out of the gate, Whitman responded with a 20-7 run fueled by threes from Lazarevic and Dzesi, and a pair of Sarenac finishes at the rim to grab an 18-17 lead. The Blues kept attacking, with Dzesi tipping in a miss in transition and Sarenac scoring in the paint to help Whitman build a 38-30 cushion before taking a 41-37 edge into the break.

Whitman briefly stretched its lead to 48-46 early in the second half but the game flipped as Mary Hardin-Baylor's pressure heated up. A 14-3 Crusader run, keyed by Zach Engels' drives and a deep three plus multiple runouts from Hudson Johnson and Grant Jessen, turned a two-point Whitman lead into a 60–50 deficit with just under 12 and a half minutes left.

The Crusaders also dominated second-chance and fast-break opportunities after halftime, outscoring Whitman 16-4 on second-chance points and 21-12 on the break for the game.

The Blues will look to get back on the winning track when they host Belhaven on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5:00 p.m.
