Men's Basketball Outdone By Belhaven

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team saw excellent production off the bench, but it proved not to be enough in a 92-73 loss to Belhaven on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center,

Whitman's offense was fueled by its reserves, as guards Xavier Santana and Mehmet Bener each scored 12 points off the bench to share team-high honors. Bernard Dzesi (6 points) and Aidan Rausch (5 points) also contributed in relief, helping the Blues' bench outscore Belhaven's reserves 49-24 on the night.

The teams traded blows in an up-tempo first half that ended deadlocked at 43-43. Whitman shot 59.3 percent from the field before the break and used a flurry that included a Bener three, a transition dunk from Djordje Lazarevic and a Dzesi layup to build a 41-33 cushion prior to Belhaven's closing 10-2 response.

Belhaven seized control immediately out of the locker room with a 13-2 burst, capped by a Braylon Dame three and a Dan Robinson jumper that pushed the Blues into a 53-43 hole. Whitman never fully recovered as the Blazers grew the margin to 20 and eventually led by as many as 25 behind relentless pressure and timely outside shooting.

Santana sparked multiple mini-runs with assertive drives and perimeter shooting, finishing 5-7 from the floor and 2-4 from deep while adding three assists and two steals. Bener knocked down four threes, including a pair in the first half that helped Whitman keep pace with Belhaven's hot perimeter attack.

The Blues return to the court next Saturday against crosstown foe Walla Walla University. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
