Men's Basketball Blasts PLU, Will Play In Fourth Straight NWC Final

SPOKANE, Wash. - Grant Hunt and Isaiah Amato both had a game-high 13 points, Ali Efe Isik chimed in with a 12-point, 10-rebound double double and the Whitman College men's basketball team delivered a resounding 82-62 win in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference Tournament.

Host Whitworth lost in a shocking upset to Lewis & Clark in the other semifinal, thus ending the Bucs run of 19 straight NWC championship game appearances. The win by the Pioneers also means Whitman and Whitworth will not meet for the tournament title for a fourth straight season.

Hunt and Amato also added game-highs of five steals and four assists, respectively, for the Blues who lost six games during a seven-game stretch during NWC play, but are now riding high after their fourth straight win. The Blues and Pioneers will square off for the title and the league's automatic NCAA Tournament birth on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Emmett Holt led PLU with 13 points, and Brandin Riedel and Miles Nash both chipped in 10 points.

The momentum that had been growing for the Blues the past two weeks spilled out on to the floor against PLU. They shot 51% from the field and 40% from three while also forcing the Lutes into 13 turnovers leading to 22 points.

The Lutes had the jump on the Blues early when Holt's jumper put them ahead by six points. It didn't take long for Whitman to get things going though, and reeled off 12 unanswered points capped by a Hunt three pointer. The Blues later ended the half on a flurry which concluded with Hunt nailing another three pointer and putting his team up 16 at the break.

The Blues will seek their first NWC Tournament title since 2020 when they square off against Lewis & Clark on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
