Blues Split Twinbill With Bucs

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In what has turned out to be a whacky end to the Northwest Conference season, the Whitman College baseball team and Whitworth kicked it off with a doubleheader split on Saturday at Borleske Field. Whitman won the opener 8-1 and Whitworth clinched a spot in the NWC Tournament with a 11-1 victory in the nightcap.

Whitman (21-18, 12-11 NWC) had entered the series controlling its own destiny but, with the game two loss, will be doing some scoreboard watching on Sunday, the final day of the conference season. The twinbill also saw Halen Otte tie Ben Parker for career homeruns and set a new Whitman single-season RBI record.

Game 1

Wyatt Adams (5-4) kicked off the crucial finale series with an impressive complete-game win. He walked only one hitter while allowing five hits and striking out five. Adams ran into a bit of trouble but it was his complete game to get and did just that by retiring the side and keeping every bullpen arm fresh.

Tristan Buehring led the Blues at the plate with three hits. Beck Maguire recorded two hits including a double and scored a pair of runs. Otte (1 H, 1 R, 3 RBI) drove in three runs to go along with homerun that put his team up 2-0 in the first inning.

Caleb Gray and Kyle Memarian both had a pair of hits in the losing effort with Gray adding his team's lone run coming in the ninth inning. Woodward (5-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits in six and one-third innings of work.

Game 2
The nightcap saw the Bucs clinch a postseason birth after lighting up the Blues with six runs over the third and fourth innings.

Oliver Brown allowed five earned runs on eight hits but was solid throughout much of his outing which went seven complete innings.

A handful of Bucs led the offensive explosion. Memerian (3 H, 2 R, 3 RBI), Morrision (2 H, 3 R) and Corder (3 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) all chipped in.

Brandon Ting led the Blues with a hit and an RBI.

The Blues enter Sunday's Senior Day finale in a must-win situation. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
