Women's Soccer Settles For 1-1 Draw With Pacific In NWC Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Pacific University in the Northwest Conference opener for the Blues on Saturday afternoon at the James Hayner Field.

I thought we had a very positive performance," said head coach Michelle Voiland. "We had the ball the majority of the game and Pacific was not too dangerous throughout the run of play. We created some incredible chances and unfortunately were only able to convert one. It is unfortunate that the referee pulled our second goal back. We will take the point and regroup and go for the three points tomorrow."

After a tightly contested opening stretch with few clear chances for either side, the Blues broke through in the 23rd minute when Bailey Bell found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

Whitman carried that lead into halftime and came out of the break with renewed energy, pressing forward in search of an insurance goal. Several opportunities went by the wayside as the Blues continued to hold a one-goal lead.

However, Pacific responded in the 63rd minute, as Ruby Waters converted to bring the visitors level. Following the equalizer, the Boxers sat deeper defensively and limited Whitman's opportunities, frustrating the Blues' attack over the final half hour.

Despite sustained pressure, Whitman was unable to reclaim the lead, and the two sides were forced to settle for a share of the points to begin conference play.

The Blues will look to gain three points with a victory on Sunday against Willamette. Kickoff at Hayner Field is set for 12:00 p.m.
