Stage Leads Strong Whitman Showing With Singles Title At ITAs

NEWBERG, Ore. - Alexander Stage won an all-Whitman singles final, Artem Manov appeared in both singles and doubles finals and the Whitman College men's tennis team concluded an excellent showing at the ITA Fall Northwest Regional Championships.

Stage swept Manov 6-4, 6-3 in the singles final after breezing past his opponent in the semifinals, also in straight sets, for nothing less than a dominant run through the field.

Manov did get a taste of the championship flavor earlier in the day however. With partner Charles Rush, he cruised in the best of three doubles final, besting Kai Wills and Noah Sutin 6-4, 6-1 for the title.

Manov's final capped an incredible ITA run. Not a top four seed in either competition, he advanced to the final in both singles and doubles and played more matches (10) than any other player in the field.

Stage, Manov and Rush were not the only Blues to shine in the tournament. The B singles tournament also saw an all-Whitman final where Claes Hansen topped Gunnar Woller 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.

William Lanstra earned a title of his own, beating AJ Avansino 6-2, 7-6 (2) to claim the A singles consolation title.

With his singles title, Stage now qualifies and will compete in next month's ITA Cup held in Rome, Ga.
