Kobayashi Scores Late To Earn 1-1 Result For Whitman

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo, - In a neutral site contest played at Stewart Field, the Whitman College men's soccer team and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor played to a 2-2 draw on Friday afternoon. The score and result was the third in as many games to start the season.

The match featured lead changes and dramatic moments, particularly in the closing stages as both teams pushed for a result. UMHB held a one-goal heading into the final 10 minutes but, as they did against Colorado College yesterday, found a late equalizer to earn the result. Riki Kobayashi had a hand in both, today following up his own saved shot with a goal in the 80th minute.

UMHB scored first, taking an early lead in the 13th minute setting the tone for much of the first half. Lucas McAllister provided Whitman's first goal with less than five minutes remaining to send the teams to halftime knotted at 1-1 

The Crusaders broke the stalemate with a goal in the 73rd minute but Kobayashi was quick with Whitman's answer, putting home what turned out to the final goal of the game past UHMB keeper Mack Elliot.

Both keepers had solid days in goal, particularly Tait Whittemore who posted eight saves to help the Blues earn the result.

Whitman remains in Colorado Springs for one more match before returning home. The Blues square off against Cal Lutheran on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
