Swimming Teams Sweep Willamette

SALEM, Ore. - The Whitman College swimming teams returned to action for their first events of the new year and the home stretch of the Northwest Conference season. The night proved victorious for both squads against Willamette as the men's team won 117-87 and the women's team topped the Bearcats 109-89.

The men's race saw the Blues go 1-2-3 in three events, the 200 free, 100 fly and 100 back. Brodie Salzbrener led the charge in the 200 free with a winning time of 1:48.11. Ian McClelland took home top honors in the 100 fly (53.02) and Finn Stukerjurgen led the pack with a 56.12 time in the 100 back.

Elliot Yung also took home top honors in an individual event with his 50.00 time in the 100 free.

McClelland and Salzbrener claimed their second victory of the day when Ian Friedrich and Adrian Dulong joined them for a meet-closing first-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:31.99).

The women's race saw the Blues win nine total races, the final one the 200 free relay to close the meet. Teague Monahan led the way with three first-place finishes, taking top honors in the 50 free (26.38) and 100 fly (1:01.31). She was also joined by teammates Cassidy Monroe, Anneliese Hanson and Elly Rectenwald for their 200 free relay winning time of 1:45.83.

Siena Hayes and Avery Riley also carried the load, each winning a pair of races. Hayes took top honors in the 1650 free (19:40.44) and 500 free (5:52.01) and Riley won the 400 IM (4:57.61) and 100 back (1:03.22).

Whitman closes out the weekend on Saturday at Linfield. Race time is set for 11:00 a.m.
