Men's Basketball Falls To Puget Sound

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team nearly erased a double‑digit first-half deficit but came up just short in a 58-56 loss to Puget Sound in Northwest Conference play Saturday night at Sherwood Center.

Marcel Elicagaray paced the Blues with a game-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including three three-pointers. Ali Efe Isik provided 11 points off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting with three assists, giving Whitman a reliable scoring punch in the lane.

Puget Sound raced out to an 18-6 lead midway through the first half behind hot perimeter shooting and a 12-point early cushion. Whitman responded with its bench, using energy from Julian Witt and Djordje Lazarevic to trim the margin to 35-32 at halftime.

The Blues grabbed their first lead early in the second half when Elicagaray drilled a three to make it 40-39, part of an 8-2 surge out of the break. From there, the game turned into a possession-by-possession grind, with six ties and six lead changes after halftime.

Trailing 57-49 with under three minutes to play, Whitman mounted one last push. Lazarevic buried a three from the left wing, then Isik sliced in for a driving layup to cut it to 57-54 with 2:08 remaining, and a Bernard Dzesi layup made it 57-56 with 43 seconds left.

After a defensive stop set up a potential go-ahead possession, an offensive foul in the lane gave the ball back to Puget Sound with eight seconds to go. The Loggers split a pair at the line, and Whitman's final chance never materialized as time expired following the ensuing inbounds.

The Blues now head on a three-game road trip with games at Willamette, Pacific and Whitworth.
