Whitman Suffers First NWC Loss In 2-0 Defeat At PLU

TACOMA, Wash. — The Whitman College women's soccer team suffered its first Northwest Conference loss of the season, falling 2-0 at Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday at East Field. The loss slipped the Blues into second place in the conference standings.

The Blues (7-2-2, 6-1 NWC) conceded twice in the first half and were unable to break through after halftime despite putting all five of their shots on target. Pacific Lutheran goalkeeper Mia Speir made five saves to preserve the shutout at East Field.

The setback halted Whitman's unbeaten start to conference play and tightened the race at the top of the standings. The Lutes improved to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the NWC, handing the Blues their first league defeat after six consecutive conference victories to start the season.

Pacific Lutheran took the lead in the 20th minute when Tia Schwetz scored her first goal of the season, with Kyleigh Archer and Abby Manolovitz credited with assists. Manolovitz doubled the advantage at the 23-minute mark, scoring off an assist from Keara Saks.

The Lutes controlled the opening half, outshooting Whitman 6-0 and earning four corner kicks while holding 74% of the possession. The two goals came just 3:07 apart, leaving the Blues facing a two-goal deficit at the break.

Whitman mounted a stronger response in the second half, outshooting Pacific Lutheran 5-2. Leah Barnes tested Speir twice early in the half, putting shots on goal in the 58th and 61st minutes. Katherine Sand added another attempt in the 73rd minute, but Speir kept the Blues off the scoreboard.

Chloe Anderson and Avery Cohen also recorded shots on target late in the match. Whitman finished with more shots on goal, 5-4, though Pacific Lutheran held an 8-5 edge in total shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky made two saves for Whitman. Barnes led the Blues with two shots, both on target, while Anderson, Sand and Cohen each had one.

The loss puts the Blues one game back of the University of Puget Sound for the conference lead. Whitman will look to get back level when they face the aforementioned Loggers on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.
