Men's Soccer Battles Whitworth to 2-2 Draw, Stays Tied Atop NWC

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitman College men's soccer team and Whitworth University played to a 2-2 Northwest Conference draw Wednesday afternoon at Whitworth Soccer Field in the season's final Battle of the Whits.

The Blues (10-2-3, 8-1-2 NWC) led twice but couldn't hold on in a back-and-forth game. The draw leaves Whitman even with Pacific Lutheran at the top of the Northwest Conference standings heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Whitman outshot the Pirates (4-8-3, 2-6-3 NWC) 27-15, put 11 shots on target to Whitworth's six and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Whitworth goalkeeper Oliver Hart made nine saves to keep his team in it.

Whitman scored first as Nathan Alvarado finished a feed from Riki Kobayashi in the sixth minute for his fifth goal of the season.

Whitworth answered in the 20th minute when Colton Depner, who had come off the bench 23 seconds earlier, scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Ryland Crane.
The Blues kept the pressure on for the rest of the first half, outshooting Whitworth 14-6 before the break. Hart turned away six shots in the half, including two from Kevin Serrano and two from Alvarado.

Whitman went back in front early in the second half. Henry Pierce scored in the 57th minute, assisted by Braxton Nemes and Alvarado. It was Pierce's fourth goal of the season.
The Pirates tied it in the 82nd minute. Jaxsen Teeter scored off a pass from Hunter Lisowski for his third goal of the year.

Whitman pushed for a winner over the final nine minutes. The Blues earned two corner kicks, Hart stopped a Pierce shot with under four minutes to play and late chances from Luis Mendez Caballero and Serrano went wide or were blocked.

Alvarado finished with a goal and an assist on four shots, three of them on target. Kobayashi added an assist and four shots, and Pierce also had four shots. Serrano led the Blues with five shots.

Niclas Isensee played all 90 minutes in goal for Whitman and made four saves.

The Blues return home for one match this weekend, a Saturday contest vs. Pacific at noon.
