Whitman Blanks Pacific 3-0, Takes Sole Possession Atop The NWC

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Three second-half goals from three players who came off the bench, plus a shutout from Niclas Isensee, lifted the Whitman College men's soccer team to a 3-0 Northwest Conference win over Pacific on Saturday at James Hayner Field.

The Blues started the day tied with Pacific Lutheran for first place in the conference. PLU tied Willamette later Saturday, which left Whitman alone in first with four games to play.

Whitman controlled the first half but couldn't score. The Blues outshot the Boxers 8-2 before halftime, and Pacific goalkeeper Kieran Buell made three saves to keep it scoreless.

Late in the first half, Whitman brought on Braxton Nemes, Luis Mendez Caballero and Fernando Lopez-Vega in a triple substitution at the 40:36 mark. All three scored after the break.

Nemes scored first at 60:50 for his first goal of the season. Lopez-Vega made it 2-0 less than seven minutes later, scoring unassisted at 67:39 for his second goal of the year.
Mendez Caballero finished the scoring at 84:40 with his second goal of the season. Seamus Kelly assisted on it about a minute after he came into the game.

Isensee played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves for the shutout. Four of those saves came in the second half, when Pacific had its best chances. He improved to 7-1-3 in goal this season.

Whitman outshot Pacific 17-11 and put seven shots on target to the Boxers' five. The Blues also had more corner kicks (7-6) and more of the ball, 58% to 42%.
Buell made four saves for Pacific. Andrew Shen led the Boxers with three shots.

The box score lists Whitman at 11-2-3 and Pacific at 3-10-3.
