Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Blank Bruins, Tightens Grip On Repeat NWC Crown

NEWBERG, Ore. — The road to a successful defense of its Northwest Conference title got a little shorter for the Whitman College men's soccer team. The Blues dominated George Fox 4-0 on Saturday at the Austin Complex while seeing Pacific Lutheran draw with Linfield, increasing Whitman's lead to two points over the Lutes atop the league standings with only three games to play.

Whitman controls its own path to a second straight conference championship, and the regular season ends with the Blues and Lutes playing each other at James Hayner Field in what could decide the title.

Whitman (12-2-3, 10-1-2 NWC) played like a team that knew what was at stake.

Keegan Chapko scored on a penalty kick in the 18th minute for his third goal of the season. Twelve minutes later he set up Pablo Gonzalez Jr., who scored out of the back for his first goal of the year, and the Blues led 2-0 at halftime.

Chapko had a goal and two assists, figuring in three of the four goals.

The Bruins (3-10-3, 3-8-3 NWC) stayed close into the second half until Remy Marcks scored unassisted in the 70th minute for his third goal of the season. Diego Roman Villalba finished off the win in the 88th minute, about nine minutes after he came off the bench. Chapko assisted on the goal, which was Roman Villalba's first of the season.

Whitman outshot George Fox 19-9, put 11 shots on goal to the Bruins' five, earned 11 corner kicks to eight and had 56% of the possession.

Niclas Isensee made three saves in 75 minutes to improve to 8-1-3. Aiden Zawilski made two saves less than a minute apart late in the game to finish the shutout. Joshua Adams-Vakulenko made seven saves for George Fox.

Whitman has three games left in the regular season, and it plays Pacific Lutheran in the last one with the title possibly on the line. Next up will be Willamette on Sunday in its final NWC match of the season before closing out the regular season at home next weekend against UPS and the aforementioned Lutes.
