Women's Volleyball Tops Pacific In Four Sets

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Arina Gushchina put down a match-high 20 kills as the Whitman College women's volleyball team maintained its grip on the No. 4 seed with a 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 25-13 Northwest Conference victory over Pacific on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.
The Blues improved to 10-8 overall and 8-4 in conference play, hitting .273 with 55 kills. Pacific dropped to 2-18 overall and 1-12 in the NWC.

Gushchina hit .300 and added six digs and two service aces. Sammy Holmer finished with 14 kills, nine digs and a .306 hitting percentage, while Rowyn Lee and Milla Hansen contributed seven kills apiece. Haylee Pruse distributed 24 assists and Melia Ferraro added 19. Lexie Uchima led Whitman defensively with 16 digs and served three aces.

Whitman established control early in the opening set, building a 6-1 lead behind three early kills from Gushchina. Later, Lauren Fogliani served during a five-point run that stretched a 10-6 advantage to 15-6. Pacific pulled within 16-10, but the Blues answered with three straight points and maintained their cushion. Gushchina finished the set with seven kills, and Lee delivered the final point.

The second set offered the night's tightest finish, featuring 11 ties and three lead changes. Pacific erased a 21-19 deficit with three consecutive points, taking a 22-21 lead on an Isabelle Darnell kill. Whitman responded by winning the final four points. Gushchina tied the score with a kill, Uchima followed with an ace and another Gushchina kill brought set point before a Pacific setting error gave the Blues a 2-0 match lead.

Pacific extended the match with a third-set victory fueled by four service aces. The Boxers built a 16-11 advantage before Whitman rallied to tie it at 18, capped by a Gushchina ace. Pacific answered with four consecutive points and eventually closed the set on an Emma Velcheck kill.

The Blues left little doubt in the fourth, racing to a 10-4 lead and later winning four straight points to stretch a 16-9 advantage to 20-9. Whitman hit a match-best .355 in the set, with Holmer recording five kills and Lee adding four without an attack error. The Blues also won 12 of 14 side-out opportunities to prevent another Pacific comeback.
