Whitman Falls at Puget Sound in Matchup of NWC Contenders

TACOMA, Wash. — Arina Gushchina recorded 13 kills and eight digs, but the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets at the University of Puget Sound on Friday night at Memorial Fieldhouse in a matchup of two teams that entered with only one Northwest Conference loss apiece. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 25-21.

Gushchina hit .429 to lead Whitman's offense, while Addie Belt added nine kills, eight digs and two service aces. Haylee Pruse handed out 14 assists, and Melia Ferraro finished with 10. Rowyn Lee contributed four kills and two solo blocks, and Lexie Uchima served two aces.

Aubrey Tanner paced Puget Sound (9-6, 6-1 NWC) with 17 kills on .483 hitting and a match-high 18 assists. Nicolette Raduziner and Maddie Badger each added 10 kills, while Samantha Keightley led all players with 13 digs. The Loggers finished with 50 kills and a .358 hitting percentage, compared with 34 kills and a .227 mark for the Blues.

The opening set featured eight ties as Whitman (7-6, 5-2 NWC) stayed within reach through the midpoint. A Sammy Holmer kill pulled the Blues even at 15-15 before Puget Sound scored five straight points to take control. Whitman later cut a 24-19 deficit to three on kills by Sophie Broesamle and Gushchina, but Charlotte Fleetwood answered with a kill to finish the set. Gushchina tallied six kills in the opener.

Puget Sound jumped ahead 9-3 in the second set and never trailed. Whitman narrowed the margin to 12-9 behind a Lee kill, but the Loggers eventually stretched their advantage to 19-10. Facing set point at 24-17, the Blues scored four consecutive points, including a Gushchina kill and a Belt ace, to force a Puget Sound timeout. Tanner ended the rally with a kill to give the Loggers a two-set lead.

Whitman erased an early three-point deficit in the third set, tying the score at 11-11 on a Belt kill and again at 12-12 on another. Puget Sound responded with three straight points, but the Blues continued to challenge, drawing within 17-16 after an Uchima ace and a Ferraro kill.

The Blues closed within a point once more at 19-18 following a Lee solo block and a Puget Sound attack error. Tanner delivered consecutive kills to restore the Loggers' cushion, and Raduziner put away the final point to complete the sweep.

The Blues will face another tough test on Saturday when they visit Pacific Lutheran who currently holds a share of the NWC lead.
