Women's Basketball Downs Bruins In Hard-Fought Affair

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Whitman College women's basketball team leaned on its defense and just enough late shot-making to grind out a 37-34 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference rock fight Friday night at the Sherwood Center.

With the victory, the Blues remain firmly in the hunt for the Northwest Conference regular-season title and strengthen their case to host the NWC Tournament at the Sherwood Center later this month.

The Blues (16-6, 11-2 NWC) never allowed the Bruins to find an offensive rhythm, holding George Fox to 29.3 percent shooting from the field and just two made three-pointers on the night. Whitman also turned 20 Bruin turnovers into 19 points, repeatedly cashing in just enough on the other end to stay in front in a game where every basket felt magnified.

Holly Morgan led Whitman with 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, adding two rebounds, three steals and a perfect 3-for-3 mark at the free throw line. Morgan did most of her damage attacking the paint, scoring 12 of the Blues' 20 points inside and sparking key runs in the second and third quarters. Emma Lena Baker chipped in six points and a team-high six rebounds, while Morgan Montgomery added four points, four rebounds and four assists in a do‑everything performance.

After the teams ended the first quarter tied 10-10, Whitman created some breathing room with an 8-4 second period to take an 18-14 lead into halftime. The Blues' defense was the story of the opening 20 minutes, limiting the Bruins to 4-for-22 shooting in the second and third quarters combined and forcing rushed looks late in the shot clock. Whitman stretched the margin to 28-20 after three, capped by Morgan's jumper in the lane in the final seconds of the third.

George Fox (12-10, 8-5 NWC) mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally behind guard Tara Ushiro, who scored eight points in the final frame, including back-to-back three-pointers that flipped a 33-28 Whitman lead into a 34-33 Bruin advantage with just over a minute to play. Morgan answered by getting to the line, calmly sinking two free throws to nudge the Blues back in front, 35-34, with 51 seconds remaining.

Whitman's defense delivered again on the ensuing possession, forcing a turnover that set up another pressure moment at the stripe. Briana Andrade stepped up and buried two free throws with 12 seconds left, pushing the advantage to 37-34. The Blues then got one final stop, as George Fox's last-second attempt to extend the game rimmed out and Morgan secured the rebound to seal the win.

Morgan's 18 led all scorers, while Andrade and Baker each finished with four points for Whitman. Kylie Ritter paced George Fox with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Ushiro added 10 points, all after halftime. The Bruins finished with a 25-23 edge on the glass but were undone by their shooting woes and Whitman's ability to convert miscues into points.

Whitman closes out its regular season home slate on Saturday against Lewis & Clark before closing the league season on the road next weekend. Tipoff against the River Otters is set for 3:00 p.m.
