Men's Tennis Competitive In Season Opening Loss At Division I Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Whitman College men's tennis team opened its spring season by squaring off with Division I foe Montana on Saturday morning, falling 6–1 to the Grizzlies at Peak Racquet Club.

Montana (2-3) grabbed early momentum by securing the doubles point with wins on the first and third courts. On court one, Artem Manov and Charles Rush battled but came up just short in a 6–4 loss to Montana's Duncan McCall and Baltaz Wiger-Nordas. The Grizzlies clinched the point at third doubles, where Joseph Townes and Johnny Wilkinson edged Hanri Luo and Guillermo Rodriguez 7–5, while court two went unfinished with Alexander Stage and Niklas Jensen level at 5–5 against Eivind Tandberg and Matt Upton.

In singles play, Montana extended its lead with straight-set wins on four courts, but Whitman's highlight came at the No. 2 spot, where Jensen delivered the Blues' lone point. The Whitman (0-1) sophomore outdueled McCall 6–4, 7–5, closing out each set with composed baseline play to notch the team's first singles victory of the spring.

Stage drew a tough assignment at the top of the lineup, falling 6–3, 6–0 to Wiger-Nordas, while Manov dropped a 6–2, 6–3 decision to Upton on court three. Rodriguez and Boyden were unable to turn the tide at the No. 4 and 5 spots, with Rodriguez falling 6–1, 6–0 to Wilkinson and Boyden bowing out 6–1, 6–1 against Townes. Luo wrapped up the day's action on court six, where he fell 6–3, 6–1 to Moritz Lesjak as Montana closed out the 6–1 team result.

Despite the final scoreline, Whitman left its opener with valuable experience against a Division I opponent and several competitive stretches in both doubles and singles. The Blues remain on the road and will open Northwest Conference play at Whitworth on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
