Women's Basketball Falls At UPS In NWC Nail biter

TACOMA, Wash. — In a game that felt like a playoff preview, the Whitman College women's basketball team fell just short Friday night, dropping a 48-47 Northwest Conference decision to the University of Puget Sound at Memorial Fieldhouse.

The loss now sets the stage for a third meeting and second in just over a week between both teams in the Northwest Conference Tournament which opens next Friday. By virtue of the loss, Linfield claimed the Northwest Conference regular season title and hosting rights for the league tournament.

Emma Lena Baker led all scorers with 18 points, adding six rebounds and three assists while going 8-for-11 at the free-throw line. Morgan Montgomery chipped in 10 points, and Holly Morgan added 10 more as Whitman finished 14-of-51 from the floor.

Whitman (16-6, 12-3 NWC) had a chance to close it out late but couldn't find the final bucket, as Puget Sound (19-5, 12-3 NWC) held on in a defensive grind that featured seven ties and six lead changes. After Whitman's Emma Lena Baker knocked down two free throws to put the Blues ahead 47-46 with 3:35 left, Puget Sound answered on the other end when Savannah Pohl hit a jumper with 3:09 remaining to reclaim a 48-47 edge.

Whitman surged early, building a 13-point first-quarter lead and taking a 21-10 advantage after one. But Puget Sound flipped momentum in the second quarter, outscoring the Blues 16-5 to send the game into halftime tied 26-26. The teams traded punches the rest of the way, with Whitman carrying a 41-39 lead into the fourth before Puget Sound's late push decided it by a single possession.

The Blues close out the regular season on Saturday at Pacific Lutheran. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
