Blues Cruise Past Lutes In Regular Season Finale, Set Sights On NWC Tournament

TACOMA, Wash. — The Whitman College women's basketball team left no doubt in its Northwest Conference regular season finale, overwhelming Pacific Lutheran 92–60 on Saturday afternoon at Olson Auditorium. The win sets the stage for a semifinal match against Puget Sound when the NWC Tournament gets underway next weekend in McMinnville, Ore.

The Blues were in command from the opening tip, racing out to a 26–14 lead after one quarter and stretching the margin to 46–25 by halftime behind sizzling 61.3 percent shooting in the first half. Whitman finished the day at 64.5 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from three, turning efficient offense and relentless pressure into a wire-to-wire victory.

Holly Morgan led the charge with a game- and career-high 23 points, going 9-for-13 from the floor while adding five assists and four steals as she consistently sliced through the Lute defense. Morgan did much of her damage after the break, pouring in 13 points in the third quarter alone as Whitman blew the game open and outscored PLU 25–23 in the frame to push the lead to 71–48.

Whitman's balance was just as impressive as its star power. Briana Andrade scored 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting and hit a pair of threes, while Morgan Montgomery added 15 points and three assists, repeatedly finishing in transition. Avery Neal chipped in 12 points, including two triples, and Emma Lena Baker and Jordan Leith combined for 12 points and key hustle plays that kept the Lutes off balance on both ends.

The Blues dominated the paint with a 46–22 edge in points inside and turned 14 Pacific Lutheran turnovers into 22 points, fueling an 11–0 advantage in fast-break scoring. Whitman's bench also provided a lift, contributing 25 points highlighted by late threes from Hayden Stilwell and steady minutes from Miriam Hutchens.

Pacific Lutheran was led by Sydney Reisner's 16 points and Kylie Griffin's 11, but the Lutes could not keep pace with Whitman's efficiency as they shot 41.5 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from deep. Whitman led by as many as 33 in the fourth quarter and never trailed after the opening minutes, closing out the conference slate with a statement win and strong momentum heading into postseason play.

The postseason schedule will be announced later this week by the NWC office.
