Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Outdone By Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College men's basketball team's road trip to Spokane turned into an uphill battle from the opening minutes, as the Blues fell 80–46 to Whitworth in Northwest Conference action Tuesday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates used a blistering first-half offensive performance and a dominant interior presence to sweep the season series and drop Whitman to 8–12 overall and 3–8 in conference play.

Marcel Elicagaray was a bright spot for the Blues, leading Whitman with 14 points and seven rebounds while playing a team-high 30 minutes. He did most of his damage at the free-throw line, where he went a perfect 8-for-8, and added three assists and two steals as he tried to steady the offense against constant Whitworth pressure. Julian Witt provided an additional spark with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting and six rebounds off the bench, giving Whitman valuable production during several of its best stretches of the night.

Whitworth seized control with a 10–0 first-half run that turned an early Whitman lead into a double-digit Pirate advantage, and the hosts never looked back. The Pirates shot 55.9 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, racking up 47 first-half points and taking a 22-point cushion into the locker room. Whitworth's balance was evident, with Caden Bateman scoring 16 points, Carson Talbert adding 15, and Stephen Behil chipping in 14 as five Pirates finished with at least seven points.

The biggest disparity came in the paint, where Whitworth outscored Whitman 46–18 and converted 23 of 29 attempts at the rim. The Pirates also turned defense into offense, posting a 13–2 edge in fast-break points and a 23–8 margin in points off Whitman turnovers. Whitman, meanwhile, struggled to find rhythm from the perimeter, finishing 5-for-31 from three-point range and 14-for-54 overall from the field.

Despite the margin, the Blues put together small surges in both halves, including a first-half stretch keyed by Witt and Elicagaray and a second-half push highlighted by Elicagaray's trips to the line and a couple of finishes from Jacob Fotu and Djordje Lazarevic. Whitman also battled on the glass, collecting 11 offensive rebounds and turning them into 11 second-chance points against a bigger Whitworth front line.

The Blues are home for a single game next weekend as they host Linfield on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 5:00 p.m.
