Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's Tennis Tops Colorado College, Falls At Caltech

The Whitman College's men's tennis team had a busy Friday in Southern California, earning a 5-2 win over Colorado College in the morning before falling 4-3 to Caltech in the afternoon. The two matches followed a similar pattern early, with Whitman taking control in doubles, but the afternoon result came down to a tighter singles finish.

Whitman 5 Colorado College 2
LOS ANGELES
- Whitman set the tone immediately in the morning neutral-site match in Los Angeles by sweeping the doubles courts. Alexander Stage and Niklas Jensen opened with a win at No. 1, Artem Manov and Charles Rush followed at No. 2, and Guillermo Rodriguez and Hanri Luo completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 to give Whitman the first point of the match.

That doubles momentum carried into singles, where Whitman quickly separated from Colorado College. Stage delivered a win at No. 1 singles, Jensen added another at No. 2, and Manov was also victorious at No. 3, giving the Blues a commanding lead. Rodriguez contributed a win at No. 4, and Luo sealed the team result with a victory at No. 6, giving Whitman four singles wins on the day and a comfortable 5-2 final.

Colorado College avoided the shutout by taking the matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but by then Whitman had already locked up the victory.

Caltech 4, Whitman 3
PASADENA, Calif. - The afternoon match at Caltech in Pasadena was much tighter from start to finish. Whitman again began well by winning the doubles point, with Stage and Jensen taking the top court, Manov and Rush winning at No. 2, and Rodriguez and Luo earning another doubles victory at No. 3. That put Whitman in a strong position heading into singles, just as it had been earlier in the day.

Singles, however, proved more difficult against Caltech. Stage picked up another win at No. 1, Jensen continued his strong day with a victory at No. 2, and Luo added a win at No. 6. Those three points gave Whitman a chance, but Caltech found enough depth in the middle and lower singles spots to edge ahead in the overall team score.

The match was decided by Caltech's ability to win the other singles courts and turn the afternoon into a 4-3 result. Even in defeat, Whitman showed it could compete closely with a strong opponent, with the doubles point and three singles wins keeping the match in the balance until the end.

The Blues play their road trip finale tomorrow when they visit Occidental for a 10:00 a.m. start time.
