Men's Tennis Tops George Fox, Advances To NWC Tourney Final

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College men's tennis team rolled into the Northwest Conference Tournament championship match with a 4-0 blanking of George Fox in Friday's semifinal at the Whitman Tennis Courts.

Playing the match to decision, the Blues clinched the dual with two decisive singles wins after claiming the doubles point. They advance to face the winner of the other semifinal between Lewis & Clark and Whitworth on Saturday morning.

Whitman struck first in doubles, with Guillermo Rodriguez and Hanri Luo cruising to a 6-2 win on court three over Luis Hernandez and Joseph Vece to put the Blues on the board. The top pair of Alexander Stage and Niklas Jensen then sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 victory against Zach Moore and Aiden Cruz on court one.

The momentum carried into singles play, where Luo was first off court, dominating at the six spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vece to push the Whitman lead to 3-0. Jensen then delivered a solid win at No. 2 singles, closing out Shoji 6-1, 6-0. Rodriguez locked up the 4-0 victory with his 6-0, 6-0 win at the four and sent the Blues into the conference final.

Whitman improves to 16-5 on the season with the win, while George Fox ends its year at 9-10. The Blues will now play for the Northwest Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on their home courts Saturday.
