Baseball Suffers Doubleheader and Series Sweep at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Whitman College baseball team dropped both ends of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Pacific University on Saturday afternoon, falling 10–9 in a walk-off heartbreaker in the opener and 11–4 in the nightcap at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

Game One: Pacific 10, Whitman 9

Whitman built multiple leads and carried a 9–4 advantage into the bottom of the ninth before Pacific mounted a six-run rally to steal a 10–9 walk-off win. The Blues pounded out 13 hits and matched the Boxers with 13 knocks, but Pacific's late surge spoiled what had been a strong day at the plate.

Luke Malzewski continued his hot stretch with a three-hit, two-RBI performance, and Christian Rivera added two hits and two runs driven in to pace a balanced Whitman lineup. Halen Otte and Landon Runyan each chipped in two RBI, and catcher Nate Petz scored twice and drove in one as nine runs crossed for the Blues.

Starter Russell Petersen turned in seven solid innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts before the game unraveled late against the Whitman bullpen.

Pacific answered Whitman's early offense throughout, then opened the ninth with a string of six hits and took advantage of two Whitman errors to erase the five-run deficit. A two-run double from pinch hitter Matthew Pavao started the damage, and Gannon McGeen's RBI single followed by consecutive run-scoring hits from the top of the order completed the comeback for the hosts.

Game Two: Pacific 11, Whitman 4
In game two, Pacific again used a big inning to seize control, scoring four times in the third and pulling away for an 11–4 win to finish off the sweep. Whitman collected nine hits but could not keep pace with a Pacific lineup that piled up 13 hits and scored in six different innings.

Nate Petz went 3-4 with an RBI to lead the Whitman offense, while Nathan Wilson added a pair of hits and a run scored out of the designated hitter spot. Otte and Nick Teng each drove in a run, and Teng reached base three times with a hit and two walks as Whitman tried to chip away in the middle innings.

Dylan Colvin took the loss after working four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts, and three relievers followed him out of the bullpen.

Pacific's middle of the order did most of the damage, highlighted by Benjamin Lewis' four-RBI day and a three-hit, two-RBI line from left fielder Trevor Kazahaya. The Boxers broke the game open with a four-run sixth that stretched the margin to 10–3, then tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to keep Whitman at arm's length despite a steady stream of baserunners for the Blues.

Next up for the Blues is a midweek non-conference game on Tuesday, April 7 against Eastern Oregon. First pitch at Borleske Stadium is set for 6:00 p.m.
