Men's Tennis Falls To No. 15 Mary Washington In NCAA Second Round

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Whitman College men's tennis team saw its season come to a close Saturday, falling 4-1 to No. 15 Mary Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament held at Case Western Reserve University.

The Blues (18-6) faced an uphill battle after dropping the doubles point, as Mary Washington (21-6) secured victories at second and first doubles to take a 1-0 lead. The duo of Asher Willenborg and Trevor Rein defeated Niklas Jensen and Alexander Stage 6-2 at first doubles, while Evan Fisher and Jack Riordan topped Artem Manov and Charles Rush 6-3 at second doubles.

The Eagles extended their advantage in singles competition, with Evan Fisher defeating Hanri Luo 6-1, 6-3 at sixth singles before Jack Riordan topped Artem Manov 6-4, 6-4 at third singles to push the score to 3-0.

Despite the deficit, Whitman had opportunities to rally with competitive three-set battles in progress at second and fourth singles. No. 38 Alexander Stage provided Whitman its lone point, defeating No. 21 Willenborg 6-4, 6-3 at first singles to cut the margin to 3-1.

Mary Washington clinched the match when Ryan Battaglia outlasted Charles Rush 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 at fifth singles.

At the time of clinch, Jensen had just begun a third set against Rein at second singles after dropping a 7-6 tiebreaker in the first set and falling in the second 7-5. Rodriguez was in the late stages on the No. 4 court but his match went unfinished with him and his opponent deadlocked at 5-5.
