Women's Soccer Scores Late, Draws With Wisconsin-Stevens Point

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Whitman College women's soccer team scored late in the second half to secure a 1-1 draw against Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday evening at James Hayner Field.

The Blues (1-1-2) trailed 1-0 after the Pointers converted a penalty kick in the 19th minute. Christa Borchardt placed the visitors in front at the 18:22 mark, and Wisconsin-Stevens Point carried the one-goal lead into halftime despite Whitman matching the Pointers with six shots in the opening 45 minutes. Whitman applied sustained pressure after the break, outshooting Wisconsin-Stevens Point 10-1 in the second half and earning all three corner kicks of the match.

That pressure paid off in the 81st minute. Avery Cohen's corner kick ricocheted off a Pointer defender and into the back of the net for the equalizer.

The Blues finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 58-42 edge in possession. Cohen led Whitman with four shots, while Leah Barnes and Violet Holme each recorded three. Taylor Lockwood placed one of her two shots on target.

Whitman goalkeeper Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky made five saves, including four in the first half, to preserve the draw. Ainsley Katte recorded three saves in the second half for Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Blues generated several chances in the final 10 minutes, including a Barnes shot saved in the 86th minute and a Bailey Bell attempt that went wide shortly afterward. Wisconsin-Stevens Point had one late chance, but Pasena-Littlesky stopped Kayce Wadas' shot in the 88th minute.

Whitman returns to action Saturday, Sept. 19 hosting Linfield for the beginning of Northwest Conference play. Kickoff at Hayner Field is set for 2:45 p.m.
