Men's Soccer Edges Whitworth, Remains Perfect In NWC

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Kevin Serrano scored in the 74th minute, and the Whitman College men's soccer team extended its Northwest Conference unbeaten streak to 21 matches with a 1-0 victory over Whitworth on Wednesday night at James Hayner Field.

After a scoreless first half, Whitman (5-1-1 overall, 3-0-0 NWC)  broke through in the 74th minute. Nathan Alvarado set up Serrano, whose goal was his third of the season and proved to be the difference. Controlling the ball at the top of the box, he created enough separation to bend a spectacular shot inside the far left post for what proved to be the match's lone goal.

Whitman controlled much of the attacking pressure, outshooting the Pirates 12-8 and putting eight attempts on target. The Blues also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Whitworth goalkeeper Oliver Hart kept the Pirates within reach with seven saves, including five in the second half. Hart denied shots from Alvarado, Luis Mendez Caballero, Riki Kobayashi, Seamus Kelly and Fernando Lopez-Vega after halftime.

Tait Whittemore earned the shutout for Whitman, making five saves. He stopped a pair of shots by Whitworth forward Jaxsen Teeter in the final six minutes and turned away Christoff Zimmerman's attempt in the 80th minute to preserve the lead.

The teams entered halftime scoreless despite Whitman owning a 5-3 edge in shots. Whitworth's best early chances came from Teeter and Aaron O'Byrne, but Whittemore made saves on both efforts.

Serrano led all players with four shots and two shots on goal. Kobayashi added three shots for the Blues, while Teeter paced Whitworth with three shots, all on goal.

Whitworth (2-4-1, 0-2-1) finished with seven fouls and one yellow card. Whitman committed seven fouls and received one yellow card.

The Blues are next at Pacific where they take on the Boxers this Sunday, Sept. 27 at 12:00 p.m.
