WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With seven players scoring nine or more points, Whitman College cruised past Walla Walla University 110-72 in men's non-conference basketball action Monday night in College Place.

Whitman improved to 6-5 on the season while the Wolves remained winless at 0-13.

Freshman Brandon Shaw and senior Chris Faidley led the way for the Missionaries with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Juan Pablo Alvarez, also a freshman, had his best scoring night as a collegian with 15 points. 

Jordan Wheeler and Will Reese added 10 points apiece to the Whitman attack, and Graham Brewer and David Michaels each tacked on nine points. 

Jordan Brandon, who scored Whitman's first five points as the Missionaries jumped in front 11-3 at the outset, finished with seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. Whitman won the rebounding battle 34-22 and hounded the Wolves into 32 turnovers.

With Jonny Long and Jordan Stimmel hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, Walla Walla narrowed its early deficit to 17-15 with 13 minutes left in the first half. But Faidley responded a few minutes later with two triples of his own to launch a 15-2 scoring spree, vaulting Whitman into a 36-19 lead. Alvarez added a 3-pointer to the outburst, which Brendan Ziegler capped with a steal and dunk.

Whitman led 50-32 at intermission and then opened the second half on an 11-1 run to build a 61-33 advantage and leave little doubt as to the final outcome. Despite making just six of 19 3-point attempts, the Missionaries shot 62.5 percent from the floor for the game.

All 11 Whitman players who made it into the game dented the scoring column. Max Adcox and Nate Stone, who combined to make five of their seven shots from the floor, added six points apiece to the Missionary onslaught. 

Dustin Miracle and Joshua Henderson each scored 17 points to pace the Walla Walla offense. Long finished with 13 points and Britt Balk chipped in with 10. 

Faidley, who nailed three of five shots from the 3-point line, tallied his 17 points in just 18 minutes of playing time. He boosted his career scoring total at Whitman to 1,438 points, moving past 1965 graduate Dave Snow (1,431 points) into sixth place on the all-time Missionary scoring list.

Snow, who played his prep ball at Snohomish (Wash.) High School, earned his Ph.D. at the University of Washington and is a professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Whitman, which opened its Northwest Conference season with two victories last weekend, heads to western Oregon for two more conference games later this week. It plays at Linfield College (McMinnville) on Friday and at Willamette University (Salem) on Saturday.
