Box Score
WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Puget Sound edged Whitman, 1-0, in overtime this afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match that was hard fought and a defensive battle throughout.
The Loggers scored with just over two minutes left in the first extra period. Robin Vieira received a through ball near the top of the box, angled right and, then, fired a shot that eluded Whitman goalkeeper
Emily Davis and tucked inside the near corner of the goal.
Moments earlier, the Missionaries had a golden chance when
Jade Anderson put a cross in front of the goal and
Danielle Audino headed it but goalkeeper Lauren Thomas made a diving save to her right.
The loss drops the Whits to 4-7 in conference and 8-7 overall. The Loggers improve to 7-1-2, good for second place in conference, and 9-2-2 overall.
In the first half, UPS made one serious threat on goal. Vieira fired a shot from about 10 yards out, straight-away, that Whitman's Davis blocked. Audino followed the rebound with a one-timer that soared over the cross bar. The Missionaries' best bid came late in the half when Lena de Guzman lofted a cross from the left and
Hallie Swan had a good look, but the shot sailed above the cross bar.
The second half saw the Loggers have several opportunities and, in turn, Whitman's Davis made several key saves. Late in the half, UPS lofted a corner deep into the box and Davis soared above the crowd to block the ball out. Earlier in the half, she gathered in a shot from Haley Rosenberg who unloaded a bullet from 15 yards away.
With a minute remaining in regulation, Whitman had a free kick after a hand-ball was called on the Loggers. Swan sent a lofting shot that short-hopped into the hands of UPS goalkeeper Thomas.
The Loggers held the edge in shots 11 to 7 and shots on-goal, 6 to 5.
Next Up: the Missionaries travel to Linfield and Pacific University next Saturday and Sunday.
