Whitman Bounces Back For 2-1 Win

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman bounced back from a one goal deficit to down Lewis & Clark today, 2-1, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

With the victory, the Missionaries move to 5-9 in conference and even their mark on the year to 9-9. The Pioneers drop to 6-6-1 in the NWC and 9-7-1 overall.

"This is a good win for us after the past few weekends, "said Whitman head coach Heather Cato. "The team played well and battled back from being a goal down. We played hard and we played with heart."

L & C got on the board early, scoring at the 8:36 mark. Emily Thompson put in a rebound off a shot by Anna Thorndike to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Whitman to tie things up. Less than four minutes after L & C had scored its goal, the Missionaries struck back when Lena de Guzman centered a ball to the top of the box that Kelsey Roehner promptly deposited into the back of the net. It was Roehner's third goal of the season.

Neither team scored the rest of the first half. Whitman broke the tie in the 82nd minute on a goal from Jade Anderson -- her second of the year. Goalkeeper Geena Fong's clearance kick was deflected and Anderson booted the ball into the net.

Whitman's defense kept the Pioneers out of the goal the rest of the way and the Missionaries had the victory in a game that was played in cold and slick conditions. Overnight rain had left the pitch wet.

Whitman outshot L & C 15-8. The shots were even at the half 6-6, but in the second stanza the Missionaries held a 9-2 advantage. The Missionaries had five shots on-goal to the Pioneers four.

Emily Davis went the distance between the pipes for the Missionaries, making three saves in earning the win.

The two teams split the season series with the Pioneers winning 1-0 in Portland back on September 22.

Next Up: Whitman hosts Willamette tomorrow at 11 am . . . it is the final home match of the regular season and the seniors will be honored before the match.
