Box Score LAS VEGAS,NV -- With senior Josh Duckworth hitting a spectacular driving layup with 1.7 seconds remaining to force overtime, the Whitman men's basketball team came tantalizingly close to taking down the top ranked team in all of NCAA Division III. In the end however, the Pointers of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point kept their perfect record intact, downing Whitman by a final score of 89-79 in overtime at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.
 
Having won 3 national championships since 2004, UWSP has been perhaps the premier team in all of NCAA Division III over the last decade, and boasted a perfect 9-0 record coming into the game. After starting the season 0-3, Whitman had reeled off five straight wins of their own, despite playing without reigning Northwest Conference MVP Ben Eisenhardt, out due to injury.
 
In a low scoring first half, UWSP staked itself to a nine-point advantage midway through the first half, going ahead 20-11 on a Trevor Hass three point shot. Whitman would respond immediately with a 7-0 run capped by a Dominic Lippi three pointer, to close to within 18-20 at the 9:43 mark.
 
The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, until the Missionaries finally caught the Pointers, knotting the score at 26 on a Tochi Oti three point shot with 4:30 left in the half. The teams headed into the locker room with Stevens Point clinging to a 31-30 lead.
 
Oti led the Missionary attack in the opening stanza, scoring 9 points, while Duckworth and Matt Mounier tallied 7 points apiece.
 
Whitman leaped back into the lead just 13 seconds into the 2^nd half on a Josh Duckworth 3 point bomb. The teams traded baskets and the lead over the second 20 minutes, as both teams found their shooting touch.
 
UWSP held a 4 point lead with 25 seconds remaining, before Oti converted a runner to cut the lead to 65-67. Forced to foul, Whitman caught a break when UWSP missed the front end of a one and one with 10 seconds remaining to setup a dramatic finish.
 
After taking an outlet pass from Mounier, Duckworth charged up the floor, found an angle to the rim and converted a twisting layup under heavy contact to knot the score at 67 with 1.7 seconds left. Tyler Tillema's half court heave was off the mark, and the game headed to overtime.
 
In a hotly contested overtime, the two teams were tied with 1:39 remaining, when Tillema made a layup, and then converted three of four free throw attempts after two technical fouls by the Whitman bench to build a five-point edge with 47 seconds remaining. The Pointers held the lead for good from there, going on to the 10-point victory.
 
Duckworth led four Missionaries in double figures, tallying 22 points on 9-15 shooting. Mounier and Oti scored 18 points apiece, while Lippi tossed in 13 points including three 3-point shots. Mounier was named to the D3Hoops.com Classic All-Tournament Team after tallying a total of 48 points in two games.
 
Whitman outrebounded UWSP by a 38-31 margin, but the Pointers made the most of more trips to the charity stripe, converting 15-20 attempts to Whitman's 9-12. Hass led all scorers, racking up 40 points on 15-24 shooting and was named Tournament MVP. Tillema was the only other Pointer in double figures, scoring 25 of his own.
 
Whitman finishes their pre-league schedule with a 5-4 record, while UWSP improves to 10-0. The Missionaries will return to action in earnest on January 3^rd, as they begin Northwest Conference play in Salem, OR to take on Willamette University, followed by a trip to Forrest Grove, OR to play Pacific University on January 4^th.
