Box Score FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Whitman came from 12 points down midway through the second half only to see Pacific University win by one point, 66-65, in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game tonight at Stoller Center.
Â
The Missionaries (6-5, 1-1 NWC) trailed 54-42 with 11:18 remaining in the game. Whitman then put together a flurry, outscoring the Boxers 10 to nothing over the next 5:01 to draw to within two.
Â
Whitman tied the game up for the eleventh time when
Matt Mounier drilled a three-pointer to make the score 57-all with 4:11 left to play. The Missionaries, then, took the lead 59-57 moments later after a layup by
Evan Martin.
Â
The Boxers drew even on a Cameron Hayes jumper only to see Whitman take the lead again, 61-59, on another layup by Martin. The Boxers would tie it up again on a Coby Proctor bucket.
Â
With fourteen seconds remaining and the Whits down by one, Whitman's
Josh Duckworth was fouled and sank both free throws to give the Missionaries a one point lead, 65-64, but with seven seconds left, Pacific's Jordan Batey was fouled. Batey proceeded to hit both free throws to give the Boxers the final margin. Duckworth fired up a jumper at the buzzer but it was off the mark.
Â
The Boxers (8-3, 1-1 NWC) were led by Batey who had 20 points and 5 rebounds. Mitch Wettig added 10 points and Proctor 9.
Â
Whitman got 16 points from Mounier -- 12 coming from beyond the arc -- and 14 from
Tochi Oti.
Philip Chircu and Duckworth also added 8.
Â
The Missionaries shot just 38.6% from the field (22-57) while Pacific fared better at 45% (23-51). The Boxers also held the edge in rebounding, 39 to 30.
Â
Whitman went to the line more times than the Pacific but could only convert 63.6% (14-22) while the Boxers hit 13-15 for 86.7%.
Â
The Missionaries split their conference opening road trip, downing Willamette last night 65-59, and, now, come home to host Puget Sound on the 10th and Pacific Lutheran University on the 11th.
