Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. –
Marcos Medina's first goal of the season put Whitman College on the scoreboard but host Whitworth University proved to have too much offense Saturday in a 6-1 Northwest Conference men's soccer victory over the Missionaries at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Whitman (6-6, 3-4 NWC) limited the host Pirates (10-1-1, 5-1-1) to just one corner kick opportunity but two goals over the opening 45 minutes of action, but Whitworth notched three goals over a nine-minute span during the second half to distance itself from the Missionaries.
Coming out of the halftime break trailing only by a 2-0 score Whitman looked to halve the deficit early but the Pirates maintained a solid possession advantage and generated four shots before the Missionaries'
Riley Paul lofted a shot over the Whitworth crossbar in the 61st minute.
Whitworth burst through with a pair of goals three minutes apart, in the 64th and 67th, to increase its margin to 4-0 but Medina came through with an unassisted marker at the 72:06 mark to give the visitors hope. Not even one minute later, though, Whitworth responded with an unassisted goal from Micheal Ramos to push the lead back to four at 5-1.
For the game Whitman registered a 6-4 edge in set pieces from the corner but were out shot by a 24-13 margin by the Pirates.
Goalkeeper
Stuart Ellsworth came up with eight saves including seven in the first half to keep Whitman in a position to challenge the favored Pirates.
The Missionaries have the remainder of the weekend off but return to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 18 for a 2:30 p.m. conference match against host Pacific Lutheran University.
