COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado –
Hailey McDonald's three-pointer opened the scoring and gave Whitman College the lead for good Friday afternoon in its 64-46 demolition of Iowa Wesleyan College on day one of the two-day Radisson Inn Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Colorado College.
Whitman (2-2) was led by
Heather Johns' double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Karla Vietinghoff scored 12 and came down with seven rebounds for the Tigers (0-3) in the loss.
McDonald's trey was followed by a Johns layup and then a McDonald layup that completed the quick 7-0 burst, and the lead blossomed to 10 points, 13-3, before five minutes had even elapsed.
The closing minutes of the first half also belonged to Whitman as it reeled off another 7-0 spurt.
Hailey Ann Maeda drained a short jumper to start it off.
Casey Poe finished it off by herself with a layup and free throw, after being fouled on her drive to the basket, and then another layup on the half's final shot, sending the Missionaries into the halftime locker rooms with a 35-18 advantage.
That lead was never threatened over the final 20 minutes of action as the advantage grew to as many as 25 before Whitman settled for the 18-point margin of victory.
Though Johns paced the offense she wasn't alone as 10 different players scored for the Missionaries. Newcomer
Emily Rommel added nine points and four rebounds, and Poe finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal to make her mark across the stat sheet.
Whitman was strong on the glass, especially in the offensive end of the court. It pulled down 25 of its 52 rebounds on offense, leading to 18 second-chance points.
Points off turnovers also factored into the final score as the Missionaries scored 16 off 20 Tiger turnovers and 10 Whitman steals.
The trademark Whitman defense was evident throughout the contest as it limited Iowa Wesleyan shooters to just a 21-percent (10-for-47) afternoon. The Tigers scored 12 points from behind the arc, another 12 from inside the line and their remaining 22 points from the free throw line.
The Thanksgiving Classic continues Saturday for the Missionaries with another non-conference outing. Colorado College will meet Whitman for the Classic finale at 2 p.m. PT. The host Tigers played visiting Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Friday's second game.
