Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A strong effort between the pipes from goalkeeper
Niko Contos kept the Whitman College men's soccer team even with Lebanon Valley (Pa.) College on Friday night at the Joe Pombriant/CNU Soccer Classic, but a goal 3:49 into overtime allowed the Dutchmen to steal a 1-0 win from the Missionaries in the season opener for both schools.
Contos came up with nine saves for Whitman (0-1) in the loss including a pair of stops within the first 67 seconds of the game. His counterpart at the opposite end of the pitch, Kyle Miller, finished with four saves in Lebanon Valley's (1-0) victory.
The game-winner came off a set piece following a Whitman foul in its defensive end. The Dutchmen's Joe Gallagher served a ball into Alex Detweiler who flicked a one-touch into the left side of the frame to nail down the extra-time win on host Christopher Newport University's Captains Field.
Even more heartbreaking for Whitman was a second-half goal that was called back by an offsides call. Though out shot by a margin of 15-6 the Missionaries were still able to generate scoring chances. The final opportunity came in the 74th minute when
Bridger Sellegren broke free and got a shot on frame but Miller was able to come up with the big stop to end the threat.
Whitman heads back into action Saturday against the host Captains marking the first time in history that the pair will square off against each other. The Missionaries' East Coast swing concludes Monday afternoon at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia.
