WALLA WALLA, Washington – Whitman College dropped both games of their doubleheader Saturday against Pacific University. The Missionaries suffered a loss in a pitcher's duel in game one, falling 1-0. While game two was much higher scoring the Whits lost 9-7 after the Boxers scored in the final two innings of the game.
Â
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader was a pitcher's duel between the Missionaries'
Robert Maislin and Pacific's Kyle Treadway. Both teams remained scoreless through the first five innings of the game, until the Boxers' Donnie Bradley connected on a base hit that scored Nathan Suyematsu in the top of the sixth inning. Suyematsu singled, but took second base on a throwing error earlier in the inning.
Â
Whitman saw opportunities throughout the game, the first coming in the fifth inning when senior,
Peter Carmichael was left stranded on third base. The bottom of the sixth saw runners on first and third for the Whits, but again Whitman came away empty handed.
Â
The final gasp for the Missionaries came in the bottom of the ninth with
Nick Johnson leading off with a single and advancing on a sacrifice bunt by
MacLean Harned.
Peter Carmichael grounded out for the second out of the inning and
Tristan Cates' pinch hit fly out ended Whitman's last chance.
Â
Maislin was relieved by pitcher
Garrett Atkinson in the eighth inning with one out. Atkinson quickly ended the half inning after a fly out and a pop out to the catcher. Maislin finished with seven strikeouts through as many innings, while allowing just seven hits and one unearned run. Unfortunately, that run proved to be the difference.
Â
Senior,
Jack Coppinger's final start of the season did not begin how he had hoped, giving up four hits and one run in the first two innings of play. Pacific found success early at the plate, collecting one run and grabbing the lead in the second inning, while Whitman was held hitless through as many innings.
Â
Coppinger pitched his way out of a pinch in the third inning when the Boxers had the bases loaded with just one out. Coppinger collected a strike out for the second out, and a pop out ended the inning for Pacific. The Missionaries bats came alive in the bottom of the third, collecting eight hits and six runs. In an inning that Harned, Carmichael and
Braden Hussey saw two at-bats, Whitman grabbed a 6-1 lead.
Â
The Missionaries were able to add another run in the fourth inning, taking a 7-1 lead. Coppinger was relieved in the sixth by
Nick Johnson. After the pitching chance, the Boxers made a run, scoring six runs and tying the game at 7-7. Whitman was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning, as the score remained tied after six full innings.
Â
The seventh inning began with
Steven Ainsworth on the mound for the Missionaries. Ainsworth held the Boxers scoreless in the seventh, but in the eighth inning Pacific was able to collect a run and grab an 8-7 lead on an overthrow to first base. Whitman was unable to get anything going from that point falling in game two by a score of 8-7.Â
