BELTON, Texas -
Shae Kanakaole led the Whitman College volleyball attack Saturday on the final day of the Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational, pacing the Missionaries with a combined 21 kills during non-conference losses to East Texas Baptist University, 3-1, and No. 16 Trinity (Texas) University, 3-0 at the Mayborn Campus Center on the campus of the Univerrsity of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Whitman (2-3) fell to East Texas Baptist (2-2) in the morning by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 14-25, 25-19 before closing out its Invitational appearance with a loss to nationally-ranked Trinity (3-3) by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-14.
Kanakaole added a pair of service aces and 11 digs to her team-leading kills total between the two matches. Also contributing to the attack were first-year players
Miranda Taylor and
Megan Henry. Each racked up a total of 12 kills over the day with Taylor picking up three digs and a block assist, and Henry chiming in defensively with four digs while also registering a block assist.
Kaileah Akker played a strong game at the net Saturday for Whitman, accumulating seven kills and nine block assists, adding to a solid opening day Friday and finishing the Invitational with 1.33 blocks per game, fourth best of all players in the event.
Defensive specialist
Hannah Linsenmayer finished Saturday with 29 digs to lead the team. The senior also added three service aces.
Setting the attack were sophomore
Anna Dawson and junior
Breanna Mehling. Dawson put up 28 assists and Mehling collected 30. Dawson also came up with 18 digs.
The Missionaries return from Texas only to jump back out on the road for the next match, traveling to Lewiston, Idaho, to take on Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday, Sept. 12 for one last non-conference match before jumping into Northwest Conference action the following weekend.
