FOREST GROVE, Ore. Â It seems Whitman and Pacific (Ore.) University can't get enough of each other in men's soccer, as for the second time in less than two weeks the teams played to a double-overtime draw in Northwest Conference action. This time it was a 1-1 tie in rainy, 50-degree conditions on the turf at Hanson Stadium, the home of the Boxers.
The draw earned both Whitman (7-4-3, 3-2-3 NWC) and Pacific (6-5-2, 4-2-2) a point within the league standings, but both team could also have used a victory as they attempt to chase down the first- and second-place teams in the standings.
Like with the previous match-up in Walla Walla -- a 0-0 tie -- Whitman out-gunned the Boxers, rapping out 18 shots to just six by the home team. Nine of Whitman's shots made it on frame, many of which were tucking just under the crossbar only to be deflected away by leaping Pacific goalkeeper Leyton Thommasen.
Whitman pounded away at Thommasen but the keeper earned his stripes with acrobatic saves to keep his team from falling behind.
The Boxers were actually the one's to break the seal on scoring, getting a goal in the early seconds of the 21st minute from Weli Alamillo. Teammate Keilan MaCulloch poked a ball skyward across to the top of the box and Alamillo was able to get a strong volley back across the goal and inside the back post.
The narrow lead lasted into halftime, not without heroics from Thommasen, but it took less than 12 minutes into the second half for Whitman to pull even.
Paal Nilssen broke free from his mark along the right side of the box and pushed a low-hanging ball across the frame where from eight yards out
Austin Betschart's quick touch tapped a volley behind Thommasen.
But that would be the final time the netting would be tickled.
Whitman continued to pile up shots -- 10 in the second half and three in the second 10-minute overtime period -- while limiting Pacific to just two shots after halftime. The barrage, however, ended without another goal leaving Whitman feeling snake-bit again by the Boxers.
Whitman's
Owen Davis-Bower finished the game with three save at his end of the pitch.
After a day off Whitman steps back into conference action Sunday, visiting George Fox University in a rematch of a game 13 days ago in which Whitman defeated the Bruins with a 3-0 shutout.
