WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College's 17th-ranked men's tennis team completed a sweep of its weekend matches, taking a 9-0 Northwest Conference decision from visiting Lewis & Clark College Sunday afternoon in the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center. The win over the Pioneers follows Saturday's win by the same score over George Fox University giving the Missionaries shutout wins over two of the other three teams in last spring's postseason conference tournament, won by the Whitties.
Whitman (2-2, 2-0 NWC) took the early advantage, winning all three doubles matches to put Lewis & Clark (1-2, 1-1) staring up at a 3-0 deficit.
The quickest of the three wins came at 3-doubles where
Petar Jivkov and
Jake Hoeger routed L&C's Keane Hindle and Pim Trouerbach, 8-0. That Whitman duo surrendered only two games Saturday in its win against the Bruins. In fact, 1-singles tandem
Zach Hewlin and
Phillip Locklear, ranked 14th in the nation, and the No. 2 pairing of
Robert Carter and
Adam Rapoport all repeated dominant performances in both matches in the weekend.
Singles action Sunday moved quickly as the Missionaries strode through five matches without losing a set, surrendering no more than four games within any set. Hewlin finished first at No. 1 followed by
Chase Friedman at 2-singles with the clinching fifth point. Carter, Rapoport, Jivkov and Locklear eventually followed suit with wins against the team Whitman defeated in the conference tournament semifinal last spring.
The season continues Friday with a split-squad date as some will head to Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, for a conference match while others will travel to Seattle University for a non-league contest. The team will come back together Saturday for a conference match in McMinnville, Ore., against host Linfield College.
