McMINNVILLE, Ore. - 17th-ranked Whitman College finished up its weekend road trip in dominating fashion Sunday at Linfield College. The Missionaries jumped all over the Wildcats from the get-go, eventually running away with a 9-0 victory in men's tennis action. The win helps the Whits improve to 2-1 on the weekend, with both victories coming in Northwest Conference play.
Whitman's (4-3, 4-0 NWC) doubles team of Adam Rapoport and
Gary Ho got the team started off on the right foot, with an 8-0 win over Linfield's (2-5, 1-2 NWC) No 1 pair.
Trevor Fennessy and
Nishaant Limaye teamed up for an 8-2 win over their opponent, marking their first doubles win of the season and the final duo,
Jacob Christensen and
Joey Diaz improved to 2-0 on the year, with an 8-4 victory. At the completion of doubles the Missionaries were in a familiar spot, leading 3-0 as they had in every NWC matchup this season.
Along with their dominant doubles wins, Rapoport, Ho and Diaz all contributed wins in their singles matches too. Rapoport collected a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1. Ho, who played at No. 2, walked away with a strong 6-3, 6-2 win, while Diaz was in command throughout during his 6-2, 6-1 winning performance.
The other three singles matches were won in similar fashion.
Alex Noyes made quick work at No. 3, playing his way to a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Luke Targett's match was the closest of the day, but was never a nail-biter. Targett fought to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5, helping complete the sweep of the Wildcats.
Azur Ali's 6-1, 6-3 performance at No. 6 was nothing short of impressive as the first year improved to 3-2 on the year.
Whitman will return home next weekend to host the 2016 Whitman Invite in Walla Walla, Wash. The Missionaries will welcome Swarthmore College, Cal Lutheran and Lewis and Clark throughout the weekend. Matches will begin Saturday and finish Sunday.
