Early deficits prove costly for Whitman

Whitman fell behind early in both games Sunday falling to both GFU and Linfield.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Whitman College finished up its final two games of the Oregon Northwest Conference Invitational Baseball Tournament Sunday against George Fox University and Linfield College. Whitman was unable to come away from the tournament with its first win of the season as the team fell 10-0 to George Fox in an 11 a.m. game and was beat 7-1 by Linfield in the afternoon game.

An early deficit put the Missionaries in a tough place in the day's first game. Fox (3-0) put three runs on the board in the first inning and added five more in the third to build an 8-0 lead. While Whitman (0-3) was able to put the ball in play, the team was unable to reach base collecting just four hits over the course of the contest. Alex Behrman, who had a multiple hit game yesterday, went 2-for-4 against the Bruins, but was unable to come across home plate.

The Missionaries stranded 10 runners on base in a game that saw three different Whit pitchers. Steven Ainsworth got the start throwing three innings, giving up seven hits and eight runs, albeit only three earned. Braden Hussey relieved Ainsworth in the fourth inning, surrendering just one run and five hits over three innings, while Sean Cunningham finished the game's final two innings.

The afternoon session saw similar results to the first with Whitman (0-4) falling behind Linfield (3-0) early. John Lyon earned the start against the Wildcats, recording five innings and walking just two. Milo Mincin came in and saw action from innings six to eight and held Linfield scoreless while accruing three strikeouts.

Whitman saw more success offensively in the second game of the day, recording six hits and bringing in one run. Lucas Thrun singled to center field scoring Joseph Zimmer in the top half of the ninth inning. Zimmer and Thrun both recorded two hits on the afternoon, but the Missionaries' early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

Whitman will play next weekend at Saint Martin's University in a Saturday double-header before heading to Portland for a double-header Sunday against Lewis and Clark College.
