CLAREMONT, Calif. – They won the draw control battle, but the Missionaries from Whitman College turned the ball over too often Saturday afternoon in a 19-4 loss to host Pomona-Pitzer College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Sagehens Athletics Complex.
The Whitties (1-4) registered a 13-11 edge in draw controls, led by
Lindsay Schwartz's game-high nine, but P-P (6-0) accrued 14 caused turnovers and added possession switches on two more Whitman turnovers, making it difficult on the second-year away team.
Thirteen of Whitman's 16 turnovers came during the opening 30 minutes of action, helping the Sagehens score the game's first nine goals.
Bea Sheffer finally lit up the score board for Whitman in the 22nd minute, burying a free-position shot behind Pitzer goalkeeper Mckenzie Scott.
Schwartz added her 16th and 17th goals of the season in the second half, sandwiched around
Anna Melville's third of the spring, while Whitman was much safer with possession, turning it over only three times and limiting the undefeated Sagehens to a 7-3 edge over the final 30 minutes.
The tough road being traveled on Whitman's spring break trip around Los Angeles -- it played Whittier College Friday, and finishes with a visit to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for a Monday-night game -- is still picking up some wins, even if not in the team record wins column.
Heading into the season head coach
Kate Robinson talked to her team about winning something every day. Whether it be measurable items such as ground balls, clears or draw controls -- as with Saturday's results at Pitzer -- or things like efficiency of movement within the game's flow, Robinson has her team thinking about winning the process, rather than just thinking about the win/loss columns. And games against Pomona and Whittier and C-M-S are part of the plan as "
I believe it's beneficial for our players, still only in year two, to see what that level is and where we're heading," Robinson explains.   Â
