FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Whitman College's second-year women's lacrosse program ran into a tough opponent Saturday afternoon, dropping a 19-6 Northwest Conference decision to host Pacific (Ore.) University under clear skies at the Boxers' Hanson Stadium.
The defeat leaves Whitman with a 1-8 mark overall and 1-2 record within the league while Pacific improves to 6-3 and 3-1, respectively.
Possession proved to be problematic for the Missionaries throughout the contest. Pacific ruled the center circle with a 25-2 edge in draw controls, which hindered Whitman's opportunities in its attacking third as it was limited to 13 shots in the contest.
Of those 13 shots, however, Whitman nearly always found the mark, scoring six goals and forcing Pacific goalkeeper Adrienn Salzwedel to come up with five saves leaving only two shots that went awry.
Lindsay Schwartz scored three times for the Missionaries, lifting the first-year's season total to 31 goals, and
Sarah Myers -- the previous week's defensive student-athlete of the week in the conference -- notched not only her first and second goals of the season but also of her collegiate career. Senior
Emily Jordan, with her third of the spring, added Whitman's other goal.
Dana Casterella had a strong day on defense for Whitman, coming up with a pair of ground balls and adding a team-high three caused turnovers in the contest.
Pacific's Jordyn Godfrey notched the game's opening marker eight minutes into the contest but Myers' first, off an assist from
Bea Sheffer, made things all square again two minutes later.
A 7-0 run by the Boxers over the next 10 minutes after Myers' goal changed the tone of the contest, however, and the Missionaries were never able to recover.
Godfrey finished the afternoon with a game-high nine goals for Pacific.
Whitman continues league play Sunday, heading to McMinnville, Oregon, where it will take on host Linfield College in a 12 p.m. game.
