Blues Brothers face the music

ROME, Ga.  The script Friday in the 2017 Oracle Cup semifinal doubles match looked to border on copy write infringement as Whitman's tandem of Robert Carter and Zach Hewlin broke to the lead with a set-one victory, dropped the second set, then played to the lead in the match-tiebreaker.

But late in the tiebreaker the script veered off course from Thursday's winning tiebreaker result under the same circumstances.

Tyler Raclin and Jeremy Yuan of the University of Chicago, the bracket's No. 4 seed, rallied back from a 7-5 deficit Friday to steal five of the next six points and down the Whitman pair, 10-8, to earn a 2-1 victory and a berth in the Oracle Cup's doubles championship match Saturday afternoon.

Carter and Hewlin will play an as yet to be determined twosome in the national third-place match prior to Saturday's championship bout.

The Blues Brothers -- both seniors, but paired together this fall for the first time in their careers -- got off to a slow start Friday, falling behind 3-0 to Raclin and Yuan in the match opener.

A service hold by Hewlin was followed by a service break, a Carter hold, and another break to vault the tandem into the lead at 4-3.

Raclin and Yuan stopped the bleeding with a break of their own, only to see Whitman's pair answer with a break, putting the ball in Carter's hand with the set on the line.

His service hold iced the win and mirrored how the two had performed in the quarterfinal match the day before, using several service breaks to push into the lead.

As with Thursday's quarterfinal the Blues' opponents Friday never trailed in the second set, squaring the match and sending it into a match tiebreak.

The tiebreak sat even at 4-4 until Carter and Hewlin won three consecutive points to inch toward the 10-point goal.

Unlike Thursday, though, the Blues weren't able to close out the tiebreak set, allowing the Maroons duo to rack up six more points while surrendering just two in producing the match victory.

Carter and Hewlin will head into Saturday's third-place match against a pair from either Skidmore (Pa.) College or Bowdoin (Maine) College, the twosomes in Friday's other semifinal match.
