SAN ANTONIOÂ Whitman's eighth-ranked women put on a show Wednesday afternoon in the opening game of the Trinity (Texas) Classic, dominating Schreiner (Texas) University, 93-47, on the floor and around the rim during the non-conference contest.
The Blues (9-1) at one point in the third quarter had more points from within the paint, 38, than the Mountaineers (2-6) had overall, 36, on the scoreboard. That little factoid held true to the end of the game with Whitman's 50 points from in close.
Never trailing in the contest, Whitman raced to a double digit lead a little more than five minute in on a
Makana Stone jumper. The lead ballooned to more than 20 only four minutes into the second quarter with
Casey Poe's 3-pointer from the right wing.
The dagger for Schreiner came in the lead up to Poe's bomb, as the basket culminated a 12-0 for Whitman.
By the time the teams took their halftime break, Whitman led 47-25 behind striking advantages in rebounds (25-8), field-goal percentage (67 percent to 24 percent), and points in the paint (24-2). Schreiner, in fact, failed to notch their first basket from inside until 40 seconds remained in the second quarter.
Schreiner had been hard pressed to work from the inside anyway, as Whitman's defensive pressure forced most of the Mountaineers' ball movement outside the arc. Schreiner seemed comfortable from long range but hit only 5 of 18 attempts to accent their lack of presence down low.
The Mountaineers attempted to break through the pressure much more during the third and fourth quarters, finding little success while heaving up only five shots, all missed, from long range.
Meanwhile Whitman continued to roll down the court and pound the basket.
At the sound of the final horn 12 Whitman players had scored at least four points and pulled down at least one rebound.
Poe led all scorers with her 18 points, while Stone (16 points) and
Emily Rommel (10) accumulated double-digit nights.
The Blues' edge off the glass was spearheaded by
Sierra McGarity's nine rebounds and Rommel's eight. McGarity also added four assists and a pair of steals.
The Classic continues Thursday afternoon when the nationally-ranked Blues square off against 19th-ranked and host Trinity University. The Tigers will have closed out the opening day of the Classic on Wednesday with a contest against University of Puget Sound, which plays Schreiner Thursday afternoon.
